Where to spot
Widely distributed across the Andes, from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to northern Peru, inhabiting humid montane and cloud forests, forest edges, and shrubby paramo.
How to spot
Identify by its prominent white leg puffs and the iridescent purple or green patch on its lower breast and belly. It is often seen hovering at flowers or perching on exposed branches, making it relatively easy to spot.
When to spot

This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males often displaying more vibrant iridescent colors on their undersides than females, especially during breeding displays.
