Spotted
A medium-sized hummingbird named for the brilliant violet-blue crown on the male's head. Both sexes have green upperparts and white underparts.
Where to spot
Inhabits arid and semi-arid scrub, oak woodlands, and riparian areas, primarily in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Often found near water sources.
How to spot
Look for the distinctive violet crown (on males) against a white breast. It has a relatively long, straight bill. It often hovers at flowers or perches on exposed branches.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its resident range, though some populations may undertake seasonal movements. Active throughout the day, especially in the mornings when foraging.
