Spotted
A large, pale, and robust Arctic gull, entirely lacking black on its wingtips. Its size and pristine white primary feathers make it distinctive among gulls.
Where to spot
Circumpolar in the Arctic, breeding on high Arctic coasts and islands. Winters south to temperate coastal regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. Found on coasts, open ocean, and sometimes inland scavenging.
How to spot
Look for its large size, thick bill, and uniform very pale gray upperparts and white underparts, notably lacking any black on the wingtips. Juveniles are uniformly pale yellowish-brown.
When to spot
Best observed during winter in temperate regions or during the short Arctic summer on breeding grounds.

The Glaucous Gull is one of the few large gulls that lacks any black pigmentation in its primary feathers, giving its wingtips a clean, pale appearance.
