A large, elegant gull with a relatively long neck, long legs, and a distinctive flat-headed profile, giving it a somewhat "stern" appearance. It's closely related to the Herring Gull complex.
Where to spot
Breeds around the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, extending into Central Asia and parts of Eastern Europe. Winters across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and parts of Africa and Asia. Increasingly observed further west in Europe.
How to spot
Look for its large size, relatively long-legged and long-necked appearance, and often a distinctly flat-headed profile. The bill is typically more slender and parallel-sided than Herring Gulls, with darker eyes and often greener-tinged legs in adults.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its core range. Migratory in northern and eastern parts of its range, with peak movements in spring and autumn.
