A relatively large, pale gull with a distinctive dark red bill, making it stand out from other gulls in its range. It is primarily a coastal species, rarely venturing far inland.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the Mediterranean region, breeding on islands and rocky coasts, and wintering along the North African and Middle Eastern coasts. Occasional vagrants appear outside this range.
How to spot
Look for its large size, relatively pale plumage, and most distinctively, its dark red bill with a black band and pale tip. Juveniles have a distinctive dark bill and mottled brown plumage.

Best observed during the breeding season from spring to summer on Mediterranean islands. Wintering birds can be seen along coastal areas.
