Spotted
The Tibetan Laughingthrush is a large, robust species with intricate plumage patterns, including shades of brown, grey, and rufous. It is a social bird, typically found in small groups foraging on the ground or in dense undergrowth. This species is endemic to the Tibetan Plateau.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent mountain ranges in China and parts of southeastern Tibet. It inhabits montane scrub, rocky slopes with scattered bushes, and alpine meadows at very high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and somewhat harsh vocalizations, which carry well in open mountain terrain. Look for groups moving through low, dense scrub or among rocks. Its large size and specific range help in identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its native range, even in harsh winter conditions. Early mornings are typically the best time to hear its calls and observe it foraging actively.
Due to its high-altitude habitat, the Tibetan Laughingthrush is well-adapted to cold and harsh conditions, often foraging in rocky, sparse vegetation.
