Koslov's Laughingthrush is a large and distinctive species with striking plumage that includes a rufous head and intricate patterns on its body. It is a social bird, typically found in small groups foraging in dense undergrowth. This species is endemic to central China.
Where to spot
Endemic to a restricted region in central China, primarily in Qinghai, Gansu, and northern Sichuan provinces. It inhabits montane scrub, rhododendron thickets, and coniferous forest edges at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and varied vocalizations. Look for groups moving through dense undergrowth. Its distinctive rufous head and bold body patterns are key identification features.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its native range. Early mornings are typically the best time to hear its calls and observe it foraging actively.
Koslov's Laughingthrush is named after Russian explorer and ornithologist Pyotr Kozlov, who discovered the species during his expeditions in Tibet and western China.
