The Crested Fireback is a splendid pheasant found in the lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia. Males are distinguished by their black plumage, iridescent blue backs, and striking brush-like crest, along with a prominent red facial wattle.
Where to spot
Lowland tropical rainforests, including primary and mature secondary forests, in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. They prefer areas with good undergrowth.
How to spot
These are often shy birds. Look for them on the forest floor, especially along trails or near clearings. Listen for their soft calls or the rustle of leaves as they forage. Use binoculars for detailed identification of crest and plumage.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon when foraging. The dry season can make observations easier as they might venture closer to water sources.
