Spotted
This rare hybrid duck is a cross between the Old World Eurasian Wigeon (Mareca penelope) and the South American Chiloé Wigeon (Mareca sibilatrix). Such interbreeding is highly unusual, typically occurring in captive collections where species ranges overlap artificially.
Where to spot
Extremely rare in the wild; most likely to be found in avicultural collections, zoos, or areas where escaped birds might interbreed. Not typically found in a natural wild setting.
How to spot
Look for a duck showing a combination of Eurasian Wigeon's rufous head or grey body with elements of the Chiloé Wigeon's striking black and white head stripes. The unique head pattern would likely be a muddled version of the Chiloé's distinct markings.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in captive environments. Wild occurrences would be sporadic and unpredictable.
