Spotted
This hybrid occurs between two species of pochard ducks, the Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina) and the Common Pochard (Aythya ferina). The resulting individuals display a blend of their respective features, often with varying degrees of distinctiveness.
Where to spot
Found in freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and ponds across Europe and Asia, particularly where both Red-crested Pochards and Common Pochards are present.
How to spot
Look for a diving duck with intermediate plumage: potentially a less vivid red crest than a pure Red-crested Pochard, or a more pronounced head shape than a Common Pochard. Body plumage may also be a mix of their distinctive patterns and colors.
When to spot
Year-round in resident areas; during migratory seasons in other regions, especially in mixed flocks of diving ducks.

Given that both parent species are diving ducks with some overlapping range and habitat preferences, hybridization between them is not uncommon, creating fascinating challenges for duck identification.
