Spotted
The El Oro Parakeet is an endangered species of parakeet endemic to a small region of southwestern Ecuador. This vibrant green parrot faces significant habitat loss.
Where to spot
Humid evergreen forests and cloud forests on the Pacific slope of the Andes in southwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
As a highly localized species, observation requires visiting specific protected areas. Look for small flocks moving rapidly through the forest canopy, often detected by their noisy calls.
When to spot
Year-round, but often easier to spot during the dry season (June-November) when food resources might be more concentrated. Active in early mornings and late afternoons.
The El Oro Parakeet is named after the El Oro province in Ecuador, its primary habitat, and is a flagship species for conservation efforts in that region.
