The Edible-nest Swiftlet is a small, pale-rumped swiftlet widely distributed across Southeast Asia. It is renowned for its valuable nests, made almost entirely from its solidified saliva, a delicacy in some cultures.
Where to spot
Widespread across Southeast Asia, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and the Philippines. Inhabits coasts, lowlands, and cultivated areas, always near caves for nesting.
How to spot
Look for relatively small, pale-rumped swiftlets flying rapidly and gracefully. They often forage in large flocks. Their presence is strongly associated with large cave systems, especially those harvested for nests.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. Most visible at dawn and dusk when large numbers gather to enter or leave their cave roosts. Present year-round in its tropical range.
