Where to spot
Native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Established as an introduced species in New Zealand. Found in open woodlands, grasslands, farmlands, parks, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its red head, white cheek patches, and the combination of red, green, blue, and yellow on its body. Listen for its distinctive bell-like or 'piping' calls, often given in flight.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen feeding on seeds and fruits. Most visible in the early morning and late afternoon. Resident species.
