Spotted
The Solomon Islands Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus polychloros) is a distinct species or subspecies of Eclectus Parrot found in the Solomon Islands and parts of New Guinea. It exhibits the striking sexual dimorphism characteristic of the genus.
Where to spot
Inhabits tropical rainforests, forest edges, and sometimes plantations across the Solomon Islands and parts of New Guinea.
How to spot
Distinguish sexes by their striking coloration: males are bright green, and females are deep red with blue on the chest and back. Listen for their loud, distinctive calls, which include squawks, whistles, and bell-like notes.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen feeding in the canopy. Most visible during early morning and late afternoon when flying to and from roosts or foraging sites.
While the general Eclectus Parrot (E. roratus) is well-known, E. polychloros is often recognized for subtle plumage variations, such as the female having a more vivid purple-blue on the chest, making it a distinct entity for bird enthusiasts.
