Spotted by
The Dusky Warbler is a small, secretive warbler with a plain, drab brownish plumage, often giving it a 'mouse-like' appearance. It is best identified by its strong supercilium and distinct call.
Where to spot
Breeds in the taiga and dense shrubbery of Siberia and Northeast Asia. Winters in Southeast Asia. Like other Siberian Phylloscopus, it is a regular but uncommon autumn vagrant to Western Europe.
How to spot
Look for its uniform drab brown upperparts, paler dirty white underparts, and a very prominent pale supercilium that contrasts with a dark eye-stripe. It often forages low in dense cover, moving restlessly. Listen for its diagnostic hard 'chick' or 'tek' call, often repeated.
When to spot
Present in breeding grounds during spring and summer. Most commonly observed as an autumn passage migrant (October-November) in areas outside its core range.
