The Drakensberg Siskin is a small, streaky finch endemic to the Drakensberg mountains. Males have an olive-green back and yellowish underparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa and Lesotho. It inhabits alpine grasslands, rocky slopes, and montane scrub.
How to spot
Explore the higher elevations of the Drakensberg. Look for them foraging on the ground in grassy areas or perched on rocks. Listen for their high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Visible year-round in its high-altitude habitat. Most active during the breeding season (southern hemisphere spring/summer).
This species is a high-altitude specialist, found only in the unique alpine and subalpine grasslands of the Drakensberg.
