The Dark-breasted Rosefinch is a robust finch with males showing a dark, almost blackish chest and face contrasting with a rosy-pink body. Females are streaky brown.

Where to spot

Found in the Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia, including Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China. It prefers high-altitude coniferous and mixed forests, often near tree line.

How to spot

Look for them in the canopy of high-altitude forests or feeding on the ground near the forest edge. The dark chest is a clear identifying feature for males. Listen for their calls.

When to spot

Visible year-round in its resident range. Best observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) when males are more vocal and visible.
