Spotted
A medium-sized, reddish-brown pigeon inhabiting humid evergreen forests of Central and South America. Its plumage is uniformly dusky, often with a subtle purplish sheen, providing excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Central and South America, from Honduras south through the Andes to Bolivia and east to northern Brazil. Found in humid evergreen forests, especially montane cloud forests and humid lowlands.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, mournful, descending 'oooOOOo-ooo-ooo' coo. Look for it foraging quietly in the forest canopy or occasionally on the ground. Its reddish tones can be a helpful clue in dappled light.
When to spot
Year-round. Often more vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, and during the breeding season.

The Ruddy Pigeon's melancholic, descending coo is one of the quintessential sounds of the Neotropical rainforest, often heard echoing through the canopy before the bird itself is seen.
