Spotted
The Copper Pheasant is an elegant game bird endemic to Japan, renowned for the male's iridescent copper-brown plumage and strikingly long, banded tail feathers.
Where to spot
Native to dense evergreen and deciduous forests, often on steep, mountainous slopes throughout the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
How to spot
These pheasants are shy and often heard before seen. Look for them foraging on the forest floor, especially near clearings or along quiet trails. Listen for their distinctive, hoarse croaking calls. Requires patience and quiet movement.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during early morning and late afternoon. The breeding season (spring) offers the best chance to observe males displaying and vocalizing.
