Spotted
Koepcke's Cacique is a medium-sized, glossy black icterid with a pale bill, similar to others in its genus, and restricted to a specific region of the Amazon. It often forages high in the forest canopy.
Where to spot
Found in a very restricted range in southeastern Peru and adjacent western Brazil. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, often along rivers and oxbow lakes.
How to spot
Look for a uniformly black cacique with a pale bill. Due to its restricted range and habitat, a visit to appropriate protected areas is essential. Listen for its distinctive gurgling calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the early morning when vocal activity is high, or when foraging in the mid-to-upper canopy.
This species is named after Maria Koepcke, a prominent German ornithologist who conducted extensive research in Peru.
