Spotted
A distinctive apalis with a striking purple-grey throat and upper breast, contrasting with a grey head, olive-green back, and pale belly.
Where to spot
Montane forests, particularly in the understory and mid-strata, in East and Central Africa (e.g., Rwanda, Uganda, DRC, Kenya).
How to spot
Look for its unique throat coloration. It is an active insectivore, often found foraging in mixed-species flocks. Listen for its high-pitched, often rapid, and buzzing calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the mornings. Breeding is likely during the local wet season.
The 'purple-throated' feature is highly distinctive and makes this species stand out, although the purple hue can sometimes appear more greyish-blue depending on light.
