The Chestnut-tailed Barwing is a vibrant and active babbler found in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayas and Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its prominent rufous-chestnut tail and white-barred wings.
Where to spot
Ranges from the Himalayas (northeastern India, Bhutan) eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. Inhabits montane evergreen and mixed forests, especially areas with rhododendron and mossy trees.
How to spot
Look for its bright chestnut tail and the fine white barring on its wings. Listen for its clear, whistled calls. It actively forages in the mid-canopy and understory, often near tree trunks.

Resident year-round. Active throughout the day, often observed in pairs or small groups, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks.
