Spotted
Tristram's Bunting is a distinctive bunting of East Asia, characterized by its bold head stripes, including a prominent central crown stripe and moustachial stripe.
Where to spot
Breeds in northeastern Asia, including parts of Siberia, Korea, and northeastern China. Winters in southern China and Southeast Asia. Found in dense undergrowth of forests and scrubland.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in dense vegetation. Its distinctive head pattern, especially the central crown stripe, is key. Listen for its sharp calls.
When to spot
Best observed during migration (spring and autumn) when it can be found in a wider variety of habitats. Breeding observation is challenging due to dense cover.
This bunting is named after the British clergyman and naturalist Henry Baker Tristram.
