Spotted
The Japanese Reed Bunting is a medium-sized bunting species primarily found in East Asia, particularly in wetland habitats. It has streaky brown plumage, with males displaying a black head and white collar in breeding season.
Where to spot
Breeds in eastern Siberia, northeast China, Korea, and Japan. Winters south through Japan and coastal China. Found in reedbeds, marshes, and wet grasslands.
How to spot
Look for it in dense reedbeds or marshy areas. Males in breeding plumage are distinctive with their black heads. Listen for their buzzy, often short song.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring and summer) when males are singing prominently from reed stalks. Also during migration and winter in its southern range.
