Endemic to Japan, primarily Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Inhabits open woodlands, forest edges, cultivated lands, and gardens.

Look for it in open, bushy areas. Its bright yellow underparts are distinctive. Listen for its short, clear song.
