The Chatham Petrel is a critically endangered gadfly petrel endemic to the Chatham Islands, New Zealand. It is a small, fast-flying petrel with a distinctive flight.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively on Rangatira (South East) Island in the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, and recently translocated to Point Gap on Chatham Island. Forages in surrounding waters.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and a prominent dark band on the underwing. Its flight is fast, buoyant, and often erratic. Due to its extreme rarity and remote habitat, observation is highly challenging and requires specialized expeditions.
When to spot
Breeding season is from October to April. Observations at sea are very rare and typically opportunistic, usually near the Chatham Islands.
