The Caucasian Black Grouse is a medium-sized grouse species native to the Caucasus Mountains. Males are particularly striking with their lyre-shaped tail feathers and vibrant plumage.
Where to spot
Found in high-altitude alpine meadows and subalpine scrub habitats across the Caucasus Mountains, spanning parts of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, and Turkey.
How to spot
Locate known lekking sites in suitable mountainous terrain. Use binoculars to scan open areas at dawn. Approach quietly and observe from a distance, as they can be very wary.
When to spot
Year-round, but the best time for observation is during the spring (April-May) when males are actively performing their lekking displays. They are most active during early morning and late afternoon.
