The Cardinal Myzomela is a vibrant, small honeyeater found across various islands in Melanesia. Males are stunning with extensive brilliant scarlet red plumage.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Solomon Islands (excluding Rennell), Vanuatu, and Santa Cruz Islands. It inhabits a variety of forested habitats, forest edges, gardens, and coconut plantations, from lowlands to montane areas.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with their almost entirely brilliant scarlet plumage, contrasting only with dark wings and tail. Females are duller but still show some red. Look for them actively feeding on nectar in flowering trees. Listen for their high-pitched, sharp, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours, primarily feeding on nectar, but also insects and small fruits. It is a resident species, observable year-round wherever suitable flowering plants are present.
