Where to spot
Endemic to Batjan Island in the northern Moluccas, Indonesia. It inhabits lowland rainforests, forest edges, and cultivated areas, typically found in flowering trees.
How to spot
Males are distinguished by their bright crimson head, nape, and breast, with a blackish body. Females are duller but retain some red. Look for them actively feeding in flowering trees. Listen for high-pitched, sibilant calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, feeding primarily on nectar. As a resident species, it can be observed year-round within its restricted island habitat.
