Spotted
The Montane Widowbird is a large, distinctive weaver species found in the highlands of East Africa. Breeding males are glossy black with small orange or red shoulder patches and a moderately long tail.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane regions of East Africa, including parts of Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia, inhabiting montane grasslands and savannas.
How to spot
Look for the male's glossy black plumage with small orange/red shoulder patches in montane grasslands. Its display flight involves a slow, deliberate flutter.
When to spot
Most easily observed during the breeding season, which follows the local rains, when males are in their distinctive display plumage.
It is often found at higher altitudes than other widowbird species, hence its name.
