Spotted
The Canary Islands Chaffinch represents several subspecies of the Common Chaffinch found across the Canary Islands. These island populations show variations in plumage and vocalizations compared to mainland birds, adapting to diverse island environments.
Where to spot
Present on most of the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. It inhabits forests, agricultural areas, gardens, and even urban parks.
How to spot
Observe in a variety of wooded or semi-open habitats. Identify by its typical chaffinch features, noting potential local plumage variations (e.g., darker on some islands). Listen for its characteristic song, which can differ subtly between islands.
When to spot
A permanent resident, observable throughout the year. Look for increased activity and singing during the spring and early summer breeding season.
