Spotted
The Yellow-bellied Siskin is a small, active finch found in the highlands of Central and South America. Males are brightly colored with yellow underparts and olive-green backs.
Where to spot
From southern Mexico south through Central America and into the Andes of northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru). Found in humid montane forests and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for small flocks foraging in trees, often high in the canopy. The male's yellow belly and olive-green back are useful for identification. Listen for their typical siskin calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal and active during the breeding season, which varies by region but generally occurs during the local wet season.
Despite its small size, the Yellow-bellied Siskin has a remarkably strong bill adapted for cracking tough seeds.
