The Buffy Fish Owl is a large, distinctive owl found in wetlands and riparian areas across Southeast Asia. It is a specialized fish and aquatic prey eater, often found near human habitation.
Where to spot
Widespread across Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia and the Philippines, favoring wetlands, mangroves, and forests near rivers and lakes.
How to spot
Look for it perched near water bodies, often on a low branch overlooking the water. Listen for its deep, booming 'hoo-hoo' or 'hoo-hooo-hooo-hoo' call.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal, but often active at dusk and dawn. Can sometimes be seen fishing during the day, especially on overcast days.
