Spotted
This rare hybrid arises from the cross between a Common or Barrow's Goldeneye and a Hooded Merganser. These individuals present a challenging identification due to their mixed characteristics, showcasing traits from both diving duck lineages.
Where to spot
Hybrids are extremely uncommon and found within the shared habitats of Goldeneyes and Hooded Mergansers, primarily in North America but also areas of Eurasia. Search in wooded ponds, rivers, and large freshwater bodies, especially near forested areas.
How to spot
Look for a combination of the goldeneye's distinct head pattern and eye color with the merganser's crest and bill shape. Note the presence of any white patches or unique patterns on the flanks or head that don't fit either parent perfectly. A good camera or scope is essential for detailed study.
When to spot
Best observed during the non-breeding season, particularly winter, when various duck species congregate on larger bodies of water, increasing chances of encountering such rarities.
The 'goldeneye' parent's contribution often manifests in a triangular head shape and a bright yellow eye, while the 'hooded merganser' parent can contribute a prominent, retractable crest.
