Spotted
This rare hybrid results from the interbreeding of the American Wigeon and the Eurasian Teal. Individuals are a unique sight, often displaying a blend of the American Wigeon's distinctive head pattern and the small, nimble form of the Eurasian Teal.
Where to spot
Most likely found in North America, particularly in coastal areas or large wetlands where vagrant Eurasian Teals might overlap with resident or migratory American Wigeons. Less commonly, in Eurasia if an American Wigeon is a vagrant.
How to spot
Look for a duck with an ambiguous head pattern, potentially showing a pale crown or a hint of green around the eye, combined with a body size indicative of a teal. The overall body shape and bill structure may also be intermediate between the two species.
When to spot
Best observed during fall and spring migration or in wintering areas when both parent species might be present.

While both American Wigeons and Eurasian Teals are widely distributed, their primary breeding ranges are largely separated by continents, making hybridization an uncommon event, often dependent on vagrancy.
