Spotted
This is a hybrid cross between a Common Shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) and a Wood Duck (Aix sponsa). Such intergeneric hybrids are rare in the wild but can occur in captive collections or where wild populations overlap with escapees.
Where to spot
Highly unlikely to be seen in the true wild. Most likely observed in zoological parks, private bird collections, or areas with free-roaming domestic/feral populations of both parent species.
How to spot
Look for a bird exhibiting a blend of characteristics from both parents: the large size and upright stance of a Shelduck combined with some of the elaborate crest or intricate head patterns of a Wood Duck. Plumage will be a unique, mixed pattern combining features of both species.
When to spot
Year-round, typically in managed environments such as ponds or larger enclosures.

Hybrids between different genera like Tadorna and Aix are quite unusual, highlighting the genetic plasticity and sometimes unexpected pairings that can occur within waterfowl, often in human-influenced environments.
