A striking sunbird, male Buff-throated Sunbirds have iridescent green upperparts, a buffy-orange throat, and a red breast band with a yellow belly. Females are duller. It has a sturdy, curved bill.
Where to spot
Found in West and Central Africa, inhabiting lowland forests, forest edges, and clearings.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-story and canopy of forests, often visiting flowering trees along trails. The male's orange throat and red breast band are excellent diagnostic features.
When to spot
Active year-round, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.

The Buff-throated Sunbird is known for its habit of following forest trails and clearings, making it somewhat easier to spot than other more shy forest-dwelling sunbirds.
