Spotted
The Black Bishop is a distinctive African weaver species. Breeding males are predominantly black with a bright orange or yellow patch on the nape and shoulders, making them highly visible.
Where to spot
Found across a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting grasslands, savannas, and cultivated fields, often in wetter areas.
How to spot
Look for the males' distinct black plumage with vibrant flashes of orange or yellow on the wings and nape. They often perch on tall grass or display flight over their territories.
When to spot
Most noticeable during the breeding season (often the rainy season) when males are in their striking black and orange/yellow breeding plumage.
