Spotted
The Green Pygmy-Parrot is the smallest parrot species globally, native to New Guinea and its adjacent islands. It is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly with tree bark.
Where to spot
Lowland rainforests, forest edges, and cultivated areas throughout New Guinea and several surrounding islands.
How to spot
Look for its minute size and overall green plumage, often with a yellow-brown wash on the face. Identify it by its behavior of climbing tree trunks using its stiff tail feathers. Very difficult to spot and requires patience.
When to spot
Active during the day, best seen while quietly foraging on tree trunks. Observable year-round.
