Where to spot
Found in forests, woodlands, shrublands, and offshore islands throughout New Zealand. Also found on some subantarctic islands.
How to spot
Look for its bright green body with a distinct red cap on its head. Listen for its chattering, 'kik-kik-kik' calls, often given in flight. They can be quite approachable in some areas.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen in pairs or small flocks. Best observed in the early morning and late afternoon when feeding or calling.
