Spotted
The Brown-backed Scrub Robin (*Tychaedon signata*, now *Cercotrichas signata*) is a relatively drab African scrub robin found in eastern and southern Africa. It has a plain brown back and a paler, often streaked, belly.
Where to spot
Inhabits dense scrub, thickets, and forest edges, particularly in hilly and montane regions of eastern and southern Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its plain brown back and streaked underparts. It often forages on the ground, flicking its tail. Listening for its soft, unassuming calls or simple song is often the best way to locate it.
When to spot
Resident year-round. It is often active throughout the day, foraging for insects on the ground or in low vegetation.
This species is known for its relatively shy nature, often staying hidden within dense undergrowth, making it a challenge to observe.
