The Brown-capped Laughingthrush is a shy and elusive babbler found in the high-altitude forests of the eastern Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its plain brown crown and heavily streaked body plumage.
Where to spot
Found in the eastern Himalayas (northeastern India, Bhutan) and adjacent parts of southeastern Tibet and northern Myanmar. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests, particularly rhododendron and bamboo scrub at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its varied calls, including soft whistles and harsher chattering. Look for subtle movements in very dense undergrowth. Its plain brown cap and streaked body are key but subtle identification features.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Vocalizations increase during the breeding season (spring/early summer).

This species is often difficult to observe due to its preference for dense rhododendron and bamboo thickets, where it forages secretively on the forest floor.
