Where to spot
High elevations of the Andes from Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and into northern Chile and Argentina. Inhabits montane scrub, open woodlands, and páramo.
How to spot
Look for them foraging in small flocks in shrubs or on the ground. The male's yellow and black pattern is distinctive. Listen for their typical siskin calls.
