Spotted
Blanford's Rosefinch is a small, rather delicate rosefinch with males displaying a rosy-pink body and a brownish head. Females are drabber, with streaky brown plumage.
Where to spot
Found in the eastern Himalayas and parts of China, including Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. It inhabits high-altitude scrub, rhododendron forests, and subalpine meadows.
How to spot
Scan dense scrub and forest edges. Their small size and quiet nature can make them elusive. Listen for their soft, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Visible year-round in its resident range. Breeding season is in late spring to summer. Easier to spot when descending to lower elevations in winter.
This species is known to make altitudinal movements, descending to lower elevations during harsh winter conditions in its mountainous habitat.
