Spotted
The Scarlet Finch is a spectacularly colored finch, with males boasting brilliant scarlet-red plumage. Females are duller, predominantly brown with some streaking.
Where to spot
Found in the Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China. It prefers dense, damp broadleaf and mixed montane forests, often in the understory.
How to spot
Focus on the undergrowth of dense montane forests. Look for flashes of red. Listen for its distinctive, often high-pitched calls and song, which can help in locating it.
When to spot
Visible year-round within its range. Best observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) when males are more vocal and conspicuous.
Despite its bright coloration, the Scarlet Finch can be surprisingly difficult to spot in its dense, dark forest habitat.
