Spotted
Brazza's Weaver is a small, streaky brown weaver bird with a yellow head in breeding males. It is a localized species found in marshy grasslands and savannas.
Where to spot
Found in Central Africa, including Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, and Angola. Inhabits marshy grasslands, savannas with tall grasses, and floodplains.
How to spot
Look for its streaky plumage and, in breeding males, the yellow head. Search dense grassy areas, often near water. Listen for its short, buzzy calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the rainy season, which is also its breeding period.
This species is named after Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, a French explorer. It is relatively shy and often overlooked due to its preference for dense grassy habitats.
