A dazzling hummingbird endemic to eastern Brazil, aptly named for the male's brilliant ruby-red throat and tail feathers, creating a stunning visual display against its green body.
Where to spot
Humid coastal Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, particularly in disturbed areas, forest edges, and gardens with abundant flowers.
How to spot
Look for the male's brilliant red throat and tail, and the female's less striking but still distinctive plumage. Hummingbird feeders are excellent places to observe them in gardens.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, foraging for nectar and small insects. Most visible during peak flowering seasons when food sources are plentiful.
