Spotted
The Blue-bearded Helmetcrest is a critically endangered hummingbird, instantly recognizable by its vibrant blue throat tufts and prominent crest. This stunning bird is a true paramo specialist, facing severe habitat threats in its limited range.
Where to spot
Critically endangered and restricted to a very small area in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range in northern Colombia. It exclusively inhabits high-altitude paramo, sub-paramo, and humid dwarf forests, typically above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet).
How to spot
Identify by its distinctive blue 'beard' (throat tufts) and prominent spiky crest. Its overall plumage is largely green and brown. Look for it feeding at low-growing paramo flowers or perching on exposed shrubs. Its unique coloration and critical status make it a highly sought-after sighting for birdwatchers.
When to spot
Year-round, primarily during daylight hours. Due to its rarity and specific habitat, observation requires dedicated expeditions. Early mornings are generally best for spotting activity.

This species was once thought to be extinct, only to be rediscovered in 2007. Its extremely restricted range makes every sighting incredibly significant for conservation efforts.
