Bonelli's Eagle is a powerful and agile medium-sized eagle of rocky landscapes. It is characterized by its dark upperparts, striking white underparts, and strong flight. This eagle is a highly skilled aerial hunter, preying primarily on birds and mammals.
Where to spot
Found in southern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia. Look for them in rocky, hilly, or mountainous areas with open woodlands or scrub, often near cliffs for nesting.
How to spot
Identify adults by their dark brown back contrasting with white underparts and black trailing edge on the wings. In flight, look for its powerful, direct flight, broad wings held flat, and a long, white tail with a broad dark terminal band.
When to spot
Mostly resident year-round across its range, though some dispersal by immatures can occur. Best observed during daylight hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when hunting activity is highest, and during breeding season (late winter to summer).
