Found in southern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia. Look for them in rocky, hilly, or mountainous areas with open woodlands or scrub, often near cliffs for nesting.

Identify adults by their dark brown back contrasting with white underparts and black trailing edge on the wings. In flight, look for its powerful, direct flight, broad wings held flat, and a long, white tail with a broad dark terminal band.
