Himalayan region, including parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, and Myanmar. Inhabits montane forests, open slopes, and high plateaus.
How to spot
Look for its robust build, broad wings, and variable plumage, typically dark brown above with paler, streaked underparts. The underwing often shows a distinct dark carpal patch. Its call is a characteristic mewing sound.

Year-round resident in much of its range, with some altitudinal migration during harsh winters. Active during daylight hours.
